What's Wrong with Cake Sort's Game Shop?

A technically sound coin ladder and a good Remove Ads upsell, with optimization gaps in the Starter Pack, the hidden VIP and a flat Super to Ultra step.

Key findings

  • All six coin packs climb monotonically, from value index 1.00 to 2.98 on the €59.99 pack.
  • The CP-5 badge says "120% more" while the real bonus vs base is +171%: the badge understates the value.
  • Super → Ultra gives exactly 2× coins and 2× boosters for 2× the price, so there is no reason to step up.
  • The Starter Pack (€3.99) has no timer or "One Time Only" label, and the VIP subscription is not in the main shop at all.
  • The Hot Deal (Remove Ads + 2,000 coins + 15 boosters for €9.99) gives about 28% bonus value over the €5.99 Remove Ads alone.

About the Game and Analysis Context

Cake Sort from D2M Studio is a hybrid-casual puzzle game in the color-sorting genre. Players sort colored cake pieces by matching them on plates, a mechanic popularized by games like Color Sort and other Cake Sort. The game uses an ad-supported model with rewarded video integration.

Currency: Single soft currency — Coins (gold). No hard currency.

Boosters: Three types:

  • Hammer — strike mechanic (removal/break)
  • Tong — movement tool
  • Shuffle — pieces reset
  • Super Hammer — premium/power version of Hammer (role is yet unclear from gameplay context; sold in two bundles at €3.99/€5.99)

Skip-It Ticket — a consumable that auto-credits a rewarded video watch without the player actually viewing an ad.

Free Gift mechanics: Resets at the start of the next day (not on a 24-hour rolling timer) — a player-friendly implementation.

VIP Subscription: Exists in-game but is sold as a separate contextual offer, not in the main shop.

Shop layout: Single vertical feed, scrollable. No tabs (→ Game Shops: Ultimate Guidelines, ch. 1.2 Layout types).

1. Shop Structure

The shop feed from the Starter Pack down to the free gift rows, and the coin and Skip-It ticket packs
The shop feed from the Starter Pack down to the free gift rows, and the coin and Skip-It ticket packs

The shop uses a partially logical structure: special offers at the top (good), utility purchase (Remove Ads) placed third (acceptable), followed by ascending bundles, and then coin packs.

Critical structural observation: The shop contains two distinct bundle ladders operating simultaneously:

  1. Starter Pack + Booster Pack (early game offers, first screen)
  2. Big Pack → Great Pack → Super Pack → Ultra Pack → Legend Pack (main bundle ladder)

These two groups are not clearly separated and create confusion about the actual progression path.

Free gift section is present at the bottom of the shop — daily visit driver exists, which is positive.

Missing: Flash deals / daily deals / timed offers in the main feed (→ Game Shops: Ultimate Guidelines, ch. 1.3 Section order — "emotional to utilitarian").

2. Currency Packs

Pack Coins Price Coins/€ Value Index
CP-1 1,000 €1.99 503 1.00 (base)
CP-2 3,500 €3.99 878 1.74
CP-3 7,000 €6.99 1,001 1.99
CP-4 16,000 €12.99 1,232 2.45
CP-5 34,000 (120% more!) €24.99 1,361 2.71
CP-6 90,000 €59.99 1,500 2.98

Bonus Progression Visualization

Value index vs the €1.99 pack
CP-1 · €1.991.00
CP-2 · €3.991.74
CP-3 · €6.991.99
CP-4 · €12.992.45
CP-5 · €24.992.71
CP-6 · €59.992.98
CP-5 carries the "120% more!" badge; the real bonus vs base is +171%.

Value Progression Check

All six packs demonstrate strictly monotonic progression — each tier offers a better coins/€ ratio than the previous one. No broken value ladder detected in currency packs (→ Game Shops: Ultimate Guidelines, ch. 3.1 Currency pack value ladder).

The progression curve is reasonably well-shaped:

  • Large jump at CP-2 (+74%) creates strong incentive to upgrade from entry tier
  • Steady climb through CP-3 to CP-6
  • Top pack reaches ~3× value of base — solid whale tier incentive

"120% More!" Badge Verification (CP-5)

The badge on CP-5 (34,000 coins for €24.99) claims "120% more."

Verification:

  • At base rate (CP-1): €24.99 ÷ €1.99 × 1,000 ≈ 12,558 coins - CP-5 offers 34,000 coins at the same €24.99

  • Actual bonus vs. baseline: (34,000 − 12,558) ÷ 12,558 = +171% more

The badge claims "120% more" when the actual bonus is +171%. The claim understates the value. This is an unusual case — the badge is conservative rather than inflated. Not a trust problem, but missed persuasion opportunity.

Skip-It Ticket Packs

Pack Tickets Price €/ticket
SKT-1 10 €2.99 €0.299
SKT-2 35 €7.99 €0.228
SKT-3 90 €19.99 €0.222

Progression check: The ticket packs show marginal scaling between SKT-2 and SKT-3 (€0.228 → €0.222, only 3% improvement). The jump from SKT-1 to SKT-2 is meaningful (24% better per unit). SKT-2 → SKT-3 barely moves, giving no compelling reason to buy the largest ticket pack. The top pack lacks a "Best Value" moment.

"Best Value" badge is visible on SKT-3 — this is misleading since the per-unit improvement at the top is minimal. Players who do the math will notice.

3. Bundles

Bundle Contents Table

Bundle Price Coins Hammer Tong Shuffle Notes
Starter Pack €3.99 1,000 5 5 5 "40% more" badge; first position
Booster Pack €6.99 — 10 10 10 "30% more" badge; no coins
Big Pack €3.99 2,000 3 3 3 Main ladder entry
Great Pack €7.99 3,500 10 10 10 Main ladder tier 2
Super Pack (Popular) €14.99 5,000 20 20 20
Ultra Pack €29.99 10,000 40 40 40
Legend Pack (Most Value) €69.99 30,000 150 150 150

Scaling Between Main Bundle Tiers

Using Big Pack (€3.99) as base for the main ladder:

Transition Price × Coins × Boosters ×
Big → Great 2.00× 1.75× 3.33×
Great → Super 1.88× 1.43× 2.00×
Super → Ultra 2.00× 2.00× 2.00×
Ultra → Legend 2.33× 3.00× 3.75×

Assessment:

  • Big → Great: Boosters jump 3.33× for 2× price — excellent scaling. Coins slightly lag (1.75×) but acceptable.
  • Great → Super: Boosters scale at 2× for 1.88× price — clean.
  • Super → Ultra: Exactly 2× everything for 2× price — flat ratio, no incentive to upgrade.
  • Ultra → Legend: Coins jump strongly (3×) and boosters (3.75×) for 2.33× price — strong whale pack.

The Super → Ultra transition is the weakest link: no improvement in value ratio means a player choosing between Super and Ultra gets the exact same value per euro. There is no "upgrade incentive."

Coin vs. Booster Value Split

Using coin pack rates for reference (CP-2: 3,500 coins for €3.99, i.e., ~€0.00114/coin):

Bundle Price Coin Value Remainder (boosters) Boosters €/booster
Big Pack €3.99 ~€2.28 ~€1.71 9 units €0.190
Great Pack €7.99 ~€3.99 ~€4.00 30 units €0.133
Super Pack €14.99 ~€5.70 ~€9.29 60 units €0.155
Ultra Pack €29.99 ~€11.40 ~€18.59 120 units €0.155
Legend Pack €69.99 ~€34.19 ~€35.80 450 units €0.080

Observation: The cost per booster unit actually increases from Great → Super → Ultra (€0.133 → €0.155 → €0.155). Great Pack offers the best booster value within the main mid-tier range. Legend Pack dramatically improves efficiency (€0.080/unit), reinforcing its "Most Value" positioning.

Starter Pack vs. Big Pack Comparison

Both are priced at €3.99 — the same entry price:

Item Starter Pack Big Pack
Price €3.99 €3.99
Coins 1,000 2,000
Hammer 5 3
Tong 5 3
Shuffle 5 3
Badge "40% more" —
Total boosters 15 9

Big Pack gives 2× more coins (2,000 vs 1,000). Starter Pack gives 15 boosters vs 9. The Starter Pack's advantage is in boosters (5 of each vs 3), but the coin gap is significant. The "40% more" badge on the Starter Pack requires clarification — 40% more than what?

"40% More" and "30% More" Badge Verification

Starter Pack "40% more" badge:

  • The pack contains 1,000 coins + 15 boosters for €3.99
  • At CP-1 base rate (503 coins/€): €3.99 → ~2,007 coins equivalent
  • Starter Pack provides only 1,000 coins + boosters
  • The badge cannot refer to coin value (coin value is below baseline)
  • Hypothesis: "40% more" refers to the booster bundle value — 15 boosters for €3.99 vs. a hypothetical unbundled cost
  • Without a clear reference point, the badge is unverifiable and potentially misleading

Booster Pack "30% more" badge:

  • Contains only boosters: 10 Hammer + 10 Tong + 10 Shuffle = 30 boosters for €6.99
  • Reference: At the Big Pack rate (€0.190/booster): 30 × €0.190 = €5.70
  • Booster Pack at €6.99 is actually more expensive than buying boosters via Big Pack equivalent math
  • "30% more" claim appears to reference vs. buying separate booster items, but no standalone booster prices exist for comparison
  • Badge claim is unverifiable and creates false value perception

4. Special Offers

Starter Pack (First Purchase Offer)

Position: First item in shop (top slot) — correct placement.

Contents: 1,000 coins + 5 Hammer + 5 Tong + 5 Shuffle at €3.99.

Assessment:

  • Standard first-purchase price point (€3.99) — appropriate for hybrid-casual.
  • No timer or "one-time only" FOMO mechanics — the offer appears permanently visible.
  • The lack of urgency reduces conversion pressure for hesitant spenders.
  • The "40% more" badge is unverified (see Section 3).

Critical gap: No indication this is a one-time offer. Without a timer or "One Time Only" label, it loses its psychological urgency. Players who don't buy on first exposure have no motivation to act later.

Booster Pack

Contents: 10 Hammer + 10 Tong + 10 Shuffle for €6.99. No coins.

Assessment:

  • Unique positioning — booster-only pack serves players who need resources but have enough coins.
  • However, placed at position 2 (immediately after Starter Pack) before Remove Ads, it pushes the utility purchase down.
  • The "30% more" badge is unverifiable.

Hot Deal (Contextual Offer — not in main shop)

Contents: Remove Ads + 2,000 coins + 5 Hammer + 5 Tong + 5 Shuffle at €9.99. "Bonus +20%" badge.

This is the most important contextual offer in the entire monetization setup.

Value comparison — Hot Deal vs. Remove Ads alone:

Item Hot Deal Remove Ads (standalone)
Remove Ads included
Coins 2,000 —
Hammer 5 —
Tong 5 —
Shuffle 5 —
Price €9.99 €5.99
"Extra" cost for boosters + coins €4.00 —

At base coin rates: 2,000 coins ≈ €2.28 market value. 15 boosters at €0.190/unit ≈ €2.85. Combined booster + coin value ≈ €5.13 for an extra €4.00 — solid ~28% value bonus on top.

The Hot Deal is the better choice for a first-time spender who will buy Remove Ads anyway. It is well-constructed as a contextual anchor. The "Bonus +20%" badge refers to the total value uplift, which is understated (actual bonus is ~28%).

5. Remove Ads

Price: €5.99

Contents: Removes banner and interstitial ads permanently. Rewarded video ads (for extra resources) and Promo offer ads are explicitly retained.

Assessment:

  • Price point (€5.99) is at the upper end of the standard hybrid-casual range ($2.99–$9.99). Acceptable.
  • The decision to explicitly keep rewarded videos is well-implemented — these generate revenue and player-perceived value simultaneously.
  • The description is clear and transparent: "Remove banner and interstitial ads forever. Keep videos for rewards and Promo offers."
  • No bonus content (coins/boosters) included in the standalone Remove Ads purchase. This is a missed opportunity to increase perceived value and conversion.
  • The Hot Deal contextual offer (€9.99) does include bonus content — correctly pushing spenders toward the higher-value bundle.

Position in shop: Third position (after Starter Pack and Booster Pack). Ideally should be higher — second position at most, before bundled content. Utility purchases convert best when visible immediately.

6. VIP / Premium Status

Observation: A VIP subscription exists in the game but is not sold within the main shop. It appears as a separate contextual offer.

This is a monetization gap. VIP subscriptions are recurring revenue generators and should have prominent placement in the main shop. Players who visit the shop but never trigger the VIP contextual offer will never see this product.

Specific problems:

  • No subscription visible in the shop feed
  • No daily benefit reminder surfaced to non-subscribers
  • Recurring revenue potential is underutilized (→ Game Shops: Ultimate Guidelines, ch. 6 VIP & subscriptions — placement and visibility rules)

7. Free Gift Section

Structure: Two rows at the bottom of the main shop feed:

  1. 80 Coins — claimable via Skip-It ticket (instant) or rewarded video (FREE when ticket unavailable)
  2. 60 Coins — COLLECT button / resets at start of next calendar day (not 24-hour rolling timer)

Assessment:

  • The calendar-day reset (not 24-hour rolling) is a superior mechanic: players who log in at 23:55 get another reward at 00:00, creating a positive, low-barrier return loop.
  • Two separate free reward rows create a richer daily interaction (good).
  • The Skip-It integration for the 80-coin row is thoughtful — it monetizes the lazy convenience of skipping the video without removing the free option.
  • Placement at the bottom of the shop is a deliberate scroll-forcing mechanic: every player who opens the shop to collect their daily gift must scroll through the entire bundle ladder first. This is a smart approach to passive offer exposure without adding friction.

8. Overall Design and UX Assessment

What's Done Well

  • Monotonic coin pack value ladder — no pricing defects in the currency tab
  • Transparent Remove Ads description (explicitly retaining rewarded videos)
  • Calendar-day reset on free gifts (player-friendly)
  • Hot Deal contextual offer (well-structured Remove Ads upsell)
  • Three distinct booster types with consistent naming
  • "Popular" and "Most Value" indicators on bundle tiers
  • Skip-It monetization of rewarded ad watching
  • Free gifts anchored at the bottom of the feed — forces full-shop scroll on every daily visit

Problems Summary Table

# Problem Severity Details
1 VIP subscription absent from main shop High High Recurring revenue product not accessible from primary monetization surface
2 Starter Pack lacks urgency mechanics High High No timer, no "One Time Only" label — first-purchase FOMO absent
3 "40% more" and "30% more" badges unverifiable High High No reference point visible; could be compared to any baseline
4 Remove Ads includes no bonus content Medium Medium Standalone purchase is bare; Hot Deal exists but not visible in shop
5 Super → Ultra transition: flat value ratio Medium Medium Paying 2× more for exactly 2× content removes upgrade incentive
6 Skip-It ticket top tier barely better than mid tier Medium Medium €0.228 → €0.222/ticket (3% improvement); "Best Value" badge misleads
7 Two overlapping €3.99 packs (Starter + Big) create confusion Medium Medium Same price, different compositions — no clear guide for player
8 Booster Pack pushes Remove Ads to 3rd position Low Low Utility purchase should lead content purchases in feed order
9 No daily/flash deals in main shop feed Low Low No time-limited urgency mechanic to drive repeat visits
10 "120% more" badge understates actual bonus on CP-5 Low Low Real bonus is ~171%; conservative badge misses persuasion opportunity

9. Recommendations

Rec-1: Add VIP Subscription to Main Shop Feed High

Problem: A VIP subscription product exists in the game but is invisible in the main shop.

Impact: Players who monetize via the shop never see the subscription offer. Recurring revenue from subscriptions is typically 3–5× more valuable than equivalent one-time purchases due to LTV.

Fix: Add a dedicated VIP / Subscription section in the shop, positioned between Remove Ads and the bundle ladder. Show daily benefit preview ("Get X coins daily + Y boosters/week") with clear duration and price labels.

Rec-2: Add FOMO Mechanics to Starter Pack High

Problem: Starter Pack appears as a permanent fixture with no urgency signal.

Impact: First-purchase conversion depends heavily on "act now" psychology. Without a timer or one-time label, players defer and often never return to purchase.

Fix: Add "One Time Only" label OR a 72-hour session timer on first install. Show a crossed-out "original price" (e.g., €7.99 → €3.99) to anchor discount perception (→ Game Shops: Ultimate Guidelines, ch. 5.2 Starter pack FOMO mechanics).

Rec-3: Clarify Percentage Badges with Reference Context High

Problem: "40% more" (Starter Pack) and "30% more" (Booster Pack) badges have no visible reference point.

Impact: Players who evaluate the claim against any other item in the shop may find it false or misleading, reducing trust in the entire shop.

Fix: Either anchor the badge explicitly (e.g., "40% more than buying separately") or replace with a concrete quantity statement (e.g., "Includes €7 worth of boosters — save 43%").

Rec-4: Move Free Gift Rows to Top of Shop Feed High

Problem: Free gift rows are placed at the very bottom of the main shop scroll.

Impact: Players who open the shop to quickly spend or browse rarely scroll to the bottom. The daily return habit depends on the free gift being immediately visible and rewarding.

Fix: Move free gift rows to the top of the feed, above the Starter Pack. This mirrors the approach used by top performers (Royal Match, Homescapes) where daily rewards anchor the shop experience.

Rec-5: Fix Super → Ultra Flat Value Ratio Medium

Problem: Super Pack (€14.99) and Ultra Pack (€29.99) offer exactly 2× coins and 2× boosters for exactly 2× price — no marginal incentive to upgrade.

Impact: Players who reach the Super Pack tier have no financial reason to spend the extra €15. Conversion between mid and high tiers suffers.

Fix: Increase Ultra Pack content to create a visible jump:

  • Coins: 10,000 → 12,000–13,000 (current 2.0× ratio → 2.4–2.6×)
  • Boosters: 40 of each → 48–52 of each

Alternatively, add a unique perk exclusive to Ultra Pack (e.g., 3 Super Hammers, a cosmetic item, or a VIP trial day).

Rec-6: Improve Skip-It Ticket Top Tier Medium

Problem: SKT-3 (90 tickets for €19.99) offers only 3% better per-unit value than SKT-2 (35 tickets for €7.99).

Fix: Increase SKT-3 to 100–110 tickets at €19.99, creating a 12–20% improvement over SKT-2. This makes the "Best Value" badge factually accurate and increases whale spend on this utility item.

Conclusion

Cake Sort has a technically sound currency pack ladder — clean monotonic progression, no arbitrage gaps, a well-structured whale tier. The Hot Deal contextual offer is one of the better Remove Ads upsells I've seen in hybrid-casual: it correctly prices the bonus content and steers the player toward a higher spend without pressure. The calendar-day free gift reset and Skip-It monetization of rewarded videos show genuine design care.

The problems are concentrated in three areas. First, the Starter Pack is permanently visible with no urgency signal — a basic first-purchase conversion issue that a single label or timer would fix. Second, the VIP subscription is absent from the main shop entirely, which means the game's highest-LTV product is invisible to the majority of spenders. Third, the Super → Ultra bundle transition is flat at exactly 2×, giving mid-tier buyers no financial reason to step up.

None of these are structural failures. They are optimization gaps — the kind that separate a shop generating decent revenue from one performing at its ceiling.

For a systematic approach to identifying and fixing these patterns across any game shop, the methodology used in this analysis is documented in Game Shops — Ultimate Guidelines.
